Week Ten

Monday, October 31, 2016

Ben, Alyssa, Gabby, Jordan, Josh, and Melody shared in class today. Crystal shared art appreciation episodes including "Halloween Festival Arts". We earn five points for participating in this. We reviewed chapter 6: drawing today. For assignments, we need to read chapter 7, post a painting along with the information about the medium and support on discussion, continue team projects, and have our journals done by week 12. For my painting, I reviewed "Painting". It is an oil/acrylic painting by Blindobot, which I found on DeviantArt website. (This is a website where anyone can create an account and post their artwork. It has a wide range of artwork, from paintings to animation.) Here's a link to the painting: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Painting-331504541

We reviewed chapter 6 again, and then started chapter 7, which we were supposed to read ourselves last night. We have a quiz for 7 points on chapter 6. Afterwards, Josh, Jake, Sean, and me all share. Tonight, we are supposed to review chapter 7 and post a painting if we haven't done it already. For chapter 6, it is important to remember the types of media and dry versus wet media. The difference between painting and drawing is the technique and medium used. Drawing usually implies working in pencil, pen, charcoal, pastel and even ink. Painting entails the use of a brush, palette knife or sponge and liquid paint. This website has "13 must know painting techniques for beginners": https://www.craftsy.com/blog/2015/07/acrylic-painting-techniques-for-beginners/

Alicia's showed a documentary about climate change, which would be related to chapter: Moving images. Crystal continued to discuss chapter 7:painting, and the various media related to it. We took a quiz on the 7 sub-media of painting for 7 points. Tonight, we are supposed to read chapter 8:printmaking, and work on the Team project. This website has a info on different painting mediums: http://www.ehow.com/list_6141823_types-painting-mediums.html 7 Types of painting media:

· Encaustic= pigment mixed with wax and resin then burned in as a heat source passes over the surface

· Advantages of Encaustic=build up textured surfaces; will not harm the paper over time

· Fresco= pigment mixed with water and applied to a plaster support usually a wall or ceiling in plaster, worked while plaster is wet

· Advantages of Fresco= large scale properties

· Tempera= water medium with durability of oil

· Advantages of Tempera = retains brilliance and clarity, doesn't yellow, dries quickly, able to build it up

· Oil= pigment combined with oil, usually linseed

· Advantages of Oil= dries very slowly, colors can be blended, multiple layers can be applied without danger of cracking, infinite range of consistencies

· Watercolor= pigment of water and gum Arabic that acts as a binder

· Advantages of Watercolor= transparency, portability, spontaneity

· Gouache= watercolor with an inert white pigment added for opacity similar to poster paints

· Advantages of Gouache= dries quickly, light colors can be layered over dark ones, applied in translucent washes

· Acrylic= synthetic/polymer perfected in the 1950s; resins and water

· Advantages of Acrylic= tough, flexible; waterproof; fast drying; effects can mimic oils, watercolor, gouache, tempera; plastic quality
