Week Three

Today, we turned in our name tags and self-assessed our bookmarks. I think there were many bookmarks much better than mine; quite a few people went above and beyond, using creative materials other than paper. (I especially like the one someone made by writing on lace!) We reviewed all of chapter one for the quiz. The main ideas to remember are: what is art, what is creativity, the types of art, and the five traits of creativity. Remember the definition of an artwork, and that every art piece has form and content, and is made with certain mediums. Creativity is very important even to business men. They can teach employees how to use something like a computer program, but they cant teach them to be creative. We were all considered artist as children, but around 6 years old we slowly became stopped looking at the world in our unique childish way. Around 9 or 10 years, most children are self conscious and have lost their creativity.

Doodles of animals inside paper.

I love drawings like these because it's a creative way to use the paper as an actual part of the drawing, as opposed to simply covering it up!

We all brought in a piece of art we completed ourselves. A few people shared theirs and we looked at optical illusions on youtube. For an announcement, we learned there's a dance group held at McPhee at UWEC held weekly on Sundays, 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Its taught by dance students. The first 2 lessons are free and after that it's only $30 for an entire year. Crystal announces a new policy that allows students to drop their worst score. We discussed chapter 2, the purpose and functions of art. Art is a social and cultural context and has six functions: Delight, Commemoration, worship/religion/ commentary, and persuasion.

Today we shared our artwork with the class and then discussed the six functions of art. (But we only made it to three: Delight, Commentary, and Worship.) As a way to remember the different funtions, make an acronym out of the first letters: DCWCPS. That could stand for “DC” (Washington), “water closet” (bathroom), and “PS” (“postscript”). The first function is Delight, the appreciation of beauty or decoration and awareness of beauty that evokes feelings in viewer. It is a piece of artwork made simply to enjoy. The second function is Commentary, which is a visual account of events. An example would be Goya’s “Art of Surprise”. The third function is Worship/Ritual, which is made to enhance religious ideas and please God. An example I chose is the Ghent Altarpiece from the renaissance times. It depicts different stories from the bible and was made to sit in the front of the church for everyone to see and enjoy during mass.
